Double power

M&P Mannheim and TGA 360° are driving forward
the 20 kV infrastructure at Heraeus.

The scope of services of M&P

  • Concept planning for new 20 kV energy supply by M&P Mannheim, subsequent partial tender for the electrotechnical planning
  • Basic assessment, preliminary design planning and advanced design planning; the target of the planning services is the VDI guideline 6026
  • Checking electrical performance data as well as location data for new equipment
  • Creation of a basis for decision-making for further planning steps: e.g. calculation of technical data, large-scale dimensioning of the switchgear, determination of required control panels, MV/LV room sizes and furnishings, talks with the energy supplier Hanau Netz GmbH, definition of new energy supply feed-in points, coordination of electrical output of the photovoltaic system
  • After clarification of all details, infrastructure planning on the site
  • Project management by TGA 360° in Hanau carried out in accordance with the AHO standard in five areas of activity; multi-project management in accordance with DIN 69901

Heraeus AG is investing in a modern medium-voltage system at its Hanau site. In order to cover its enormous electricity demand in a future-proof manner, the large corporation is putting its faith in the expertise of M&P twice in 2024. TGA 360° has been commissioned with project management, while M&P Mannheim is planning the new core element of the power supply.

Two-pillar strategy for Heraeus

The city of Hanau, which historically housed the residence of lords and counts, is not just the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm. Appropriately, the ascent of the city following extensive destruction during the Second World War to become an important location for industry and technology has been something of a fairy tale.

Heraeus, a globally active precious metals and technology company based in Hanau and with strong roots in Germany, has played a major role in that story. The company has been family-owned for more than 155 years. Heraeus’ business areas span precious metals, sensors, dental products and biomaterials, as well as quartz glass and speciality light sources. Sustainability and the responsible use of resources are important corporate principles of Heraeus.

Now the power supply for the industrial complex, which is about one kilometre long and half a kilometre wide, is to be brought up to the technical state of the art. The measures to be implemented include a new 20 kV infrastructure, decarbonisation and sustainable approaches to generating electricity through photovoltaics and wind power.

In August 2023, M&P Mannheim GmbH prepared the concept planning for the new 20 kV energy supply. In January 2024, our experts from Baden-Württemberg were awarded the partial tender for the electrotechnical planning.

The project as a whole needs effective management, and another M&P Group company was commissioned with that task: TGA 360°. The two-pillar principle of planning and management from M&P offers numerous advantages for the customer, such as short communication channels, cost and time savings and a dynamic exchange of knowledge.

New 20 kV electric power system for the melting furnaces at Heraeus

M&P Mannheim was awarded the tender for the planning of the 20 kV concept at Heraeus, including basic assessment, preliminary design planning and advanced design planning. The target of the planning services is the VDI guideline 6026. Our tasks include checking electrical performance data as well as location data for new equipment. Based on these results, we create a basis for decision-making and coordinate further planning steps with the management of Heraeus. This is followed by the calculation of technical data, large-scale dimensioning of the switchgear, determination of required control panels, MV/LV room sizes, and furnishings. Talks are being held with the energy supplier Hanau Netz GmbH, new energy supply feed-in points are being defined and the electrical output of the photovoltaic system is being coordinated. Once these details have been clarified, on-site infrastructure planning will start. This complex task requires close coordination with various project stakeholders, with TGA 360° bringing all the different threads of the project together as the technical expert.

Project management: standardised procedure for complex processes

The project management by TGA 360° in Hanau is being carried out in accordance with the AHO standard in five areas of activity: organisation, information, documentation; ensuring qualities and quantities; determination of costs and financing; compliance with deadlines, capacities and logistics; participation in the conclusion of contracts and insurance.

This multi-project management in accordance with DIN 69901 offers the ideal framework for the supervision of several individual projects on behalf of Heraeus. ‘A medium-voltage system of such gigantic proportions needs a shell, a roof and a foundation. That involves many different planners. Eight systems will be built individually and transferred into an overall project. We manage the entire process, coordinate regularly with the client and ensure transparency at all times,’ says Thomas Gartung, Managing Director of TGA 360°.

The task will take several years to complete and is being carried out by both M&P subsidiaries with the utmost attention to the needs of the customer, including in terms of project quality assurance. The experts from Mannheim and Braunschweig are not cutting any corners: despite the interdisciplinary cooperation, the roles of planning and project management remain clearly separated. Compliance is an integral part of M&P’s two-pillar strategy.
