The adaptation of processes from information technology continuously poses new challenges, especially in the field of building digitisation and technological development in building automation (BA). On the one hand, this technology offers enormous potential in terms of energy-efficient building operation and increased user comfort. On the other hand, the networking of systems brings equally high potential for attacks (e.g. through sabotage or manipulation) against which building owners, operators and users need to protect themselves.
Building automation from M&P: secure in the knowledge it’s a good solution
M&P has a large customer base in the field of critical infrastructure and the associated (legal) obligations in the field of information security. For our team, this results in a particular challenge in terms of the quality of project processing, especially in building automation. We are responding to this with two pioneering approaches.
First: the planning approach. It covers all aspects of technical information security and includes basic considerations of possible requirements for the security of the BA, as formulated by the client. On the basis of these requirements, technical solutions for the development of the building automation network and the use of suitable automation, BA management and security components are developed – complemented by solution concepts for network and security management. The overall aim: all-round secure operation.
Step two: a consulting approach that leaves no stone unturned
Determining the safety requirements and orientation in terms of normative requirements as they apply for a system, either yet to be built or existing, can pose major challenges for building owners and operators. That is why we have developed the consulting approach. It primarily covers the concerns of organisational information security: the focus is on secure operation of all systems. In the process, we bridge the gap between specialist planning, operations and the construction manager or client in order to be able to meet all concerns equally. Our consulting approach includes:
- Determination of the information security requirements of the system in the context of the fulfilment of its purpose, accompanied by an inventory of existing systems.
- Integration and coordination of other technical systems or specialist planning of building technology into the information security process (e.g. risk management process).
- Creation of the basis (e.g. in the form of operator concepts) for operation and maintenance by the operator’s own operating personnel or by an external maintenance service provider.
- Patch and change management and secure exchange or replacement of system components at the end of their life cycle.
